(836) Timeless

In the Kiyomizu Kanondo (清水観音堂) in Ueno there is a pine tree with its trunk shaped as a perfect circle -its name is "tsuki no matsu" (月の松) or "moon tree". It has been a trademark of Ueno since the time of famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) i.e. early-mid 19th century; as a matter of fact it is part of one of his most famous works, from the "100 Famous Views of Edo" (Meisho Edo Hyakkei/名所江戸百景) series.
