Minami Senju (南千住) in Arakawa Ward (荒川区) was where Matsuo Basho (松尾 芭蕉, 1644–1694) perhaps the most famous haiku (俳句) began on March 27, 1689 his long trip around Japan; his travel diary, titled "Oku no Hosomichi" (奥の細道/おくのほそ道/The narrow road to the interior) is considered to be one of Japan's most important literary works, hence the Basho's statue sponsored by the ward on the western exit of the area's station.
