(1395) And now for something completely disgusting


It's often said that contrary to the Chinese who will eat anything, the Japanese don't eat disgusting stuff. If you go to Nagano, though, you will see that there are exceptions like here where next to gudgeons or moroko/モロコ  (left) there are grasshoppers or inago/イナゴ (right)...


...or like here where on the left jar there are hornet larvae or hachi no ko/はちのこ/蜂の子 and on the right, larvae of an aquatic insect called zazamushi/ざざむし. Luckily, Nagano is quite far from Tokyo.
